The Celia Project: A Research Collaboration on the History of Slavery and Sexual Violence
2019-05-23 ··· Martha S. Jones, Hannah Rosen
The Celia Project was created by members of the University of Michigan who analyzed the history of the Missouri v. Celia case. The case covers the murder trial of Celia, an enslaved woman in the state of Missouri who killed her owner after years of sexual abuse. The project mentions the efforts made to have the case of Celia taught in college classrooms, which implies that the targeted audience of this website may be college students. This project examines the role of sexual abuse in slavery and how it has affected the perceptions of black women today.
