German Heritage in Letters

German Heritage in Letters is a project whose goal is to make available collections of primary source letters between immigrants from German-speaking countries and their families back in Europe and also give researchers a transcription of the letters, creating a collection of machine-readable texts for analysis. The database records the experiences of immigrant men and women forging a new life for themselves in America as well as the ways in which immigration to America affected those left behind in Europe. Gender researchers will be interested in this project because of the ability to search for specific topics and words within letters, to examine the relationships held between female immigrants and their families back home.
